If you are ever here, eat there: #5: Bangkok

It seems somehow wrong to recommend a restaurant in Bangkok, where there are so many places where you can eat exceptionally good food. You would have to try quite hard to make a bad food or restaurant choice here. Still, there is one place that really stands out in my memory: Cabbages and Condoms. You can eat in the airconditioned interior, or in the shady courtyard (lit at night with pretty lights in creative shades made from - you guessed it - condoms). OK, so the place is full of tourists, but don't let that put you off. All the classics from the Thai kitchen: Pad Thai, Tom Yum Kung, Thai salads are there - well prepared and delicious. You'll also find some slightly more unusual choices which I highly recommend - try the mountain chicken bathed in wild honey, or the shrimps and cashew nut served in a coconut. They're not precious about the recipes - you can buy the Cabbages and Condoms recipe book in the souvenir shop and try them out for yourself when you get home. The decor is quirkily condom-inspired, as the restaurant is an income generator for the Population and Community Development Association. The food is "guaranteed not to cause pregnancy".

Two words on what to drink in Thailand: FRUIT SHAKES. On our first trip to Thailand, we were there for almost a week before trying a fruit shake - what a missed opportunity. Fresh fruit blended with ice and sugar syrup sounds so simple, but try it in orange, lemon, watermelon, coconut., mango, pineapple, banana. Absolutely delicious.

Cabbages and Condoms is at Sukhumvit Soi 12, Sukhumvit, Bangkok or telephone 02 229 4610.
