Seafood is not generally my
first choice of restaurant. It's not that I don't like it, but rather that
there are many things I like more. But from the first nibble of the
chilled seafood platter to the last melting mouthful of Salmon, Wildfire had
me hooked. It's quite a big restaurant on Auckland's waterfront, and offers a
wide menu. It's billed as a Brazilian-style Churrascaria, but you can also order
the charcuterie, steak, seafood and pasta dishes a la carte, which we
did.
Auckland harbour |
Although it was raining, the
evening was mild and we sat outside, looking out over the harbour. The
service was perfect - prompt (a rarity in the New Zealand restaurants we
tried), efficient and unobtrusive.
Wildfire's chilled seafood platter |
The chilled seafood platter included
fresh oysters, mussels, prawns and sashimi (served with a fantastic
Thai-style sauce). It was super-fresh and tasty. But then Wildfire let me
down. The Marlborough Salmon main course, pan-roasted very rare, was so
succulent that I have not been able to look at another salmon
since. It can only disappointment. Curse you, Wildfire! Christian had the
Yellow Fin Tuna (wood grilled), which was damn fine too. It's not cheap, but
the quality of all the dishes we had was exceptional.
Wildfire is on Princes Wharf, Quay St, Auckland, telephone (093) 537 595.
