If you are ever here, eat there #29: Langkawi

Langkawi was near the end of a couple of weeks in Malaysia. We thought we'd take it easy and booked into a rather rustic hotel in a nature reserve, looking onto a deserted beach. It was very basic, but hard to picture something more peaceful.

The tropical rain was falling gently when we headed for dinner at Nam at the Bon Ton Resort. A thatched roof and open sides, facing a paddy field. Wonderful atmosphere, and beautifully furnished with traditional wooden furniture, carved pillars, pottery and textiles. I don't remember any cats, but I've seen more recent reviews that talk about cats roaming all over the place (well-fed, but still appreciating a tidbit).

Nyonya platter
The menu  offers an odd mix of south-east Asian and Mediterranean food (possibly because the resort is owned by an Australian?) but we went straight for the Nyonya platter. We had tried Peranakan or Nonya cuisine in Penang. It's a blending of Chinese, Malay and other influences and typically uses Chinese ingredients with Malay spices and cooking methods. The Nyonya platter consists of nine dishes, served on a banana leaf: prawns in pandan leaf, fish tamarind, beef with peanuts, chicken with lime leaf, pickled lamb curry, lady's finger (okra) sambal, pineapple acar, eggplant in coconut curry, and mango and cashew nut rice.  Each dish was delicious, but the main pleasure came from the contrast, and from the magical setting.
